The Southern African Young Diplomats had the privilege of visiting the Cuban Embassy in Zimbabwe. This enlightening experience offered aspiring diplomats a unique opportunity to engage with the intricacies of diplomacy and international relations. Our delegation was warmly welcomed by the Ambassador of Cuba, Her Excellency Susellys Pérez Mesa, and her dedicated staff, who provided insightful perspectives on Cuba’s history, culture, and foreign
The Ambassador shared an overview of Cuba’s rich history, highlighting the pivotal role of Fidel Castro in shaping the nation’s trajectory. She illuminated the struggles and triumphs of Cuba, particularly in the context of its diplomatic relations with other countries. The Ambassador emphasized the importance of understanding historical contexts in diplomacy, which resonated deeply with our group of aspiring diplomats.
Cuban culture, known for its vibrancy and resilience, was a focal point of the discussion. The Ambassador spoke passionately about the arts, music, and traditions that define Cuban identity. This cultural richness is not only a source of national pride but also a vital component of Cuba’s diplomatic engagement with the world. The emphasis on cultural diplomacy was particularly inspiring, as it underscores the role of culture in fostering international relationships.
A significant aspect of our discussion was the role of women in diplomacy. The Ambassador highlighted Cuba’s commitment to promoting female representation within its diplomatic corps. She shared insights on the strides made towards gender equality in various sectors, including politics and international relations. Her Excellency Ms. Susellys Pérez Mesa, articulated the challenges posed by this longstanding embargo and the impact it has on the Cuban economy and society. Despite these challenges, she expressed optimism about Cuba’s resilience and its commitment to fostering international solidarity and cooperation.
