Ubuntu & Solidaridad . Women’s Fair at the Embassy of Nicaragua.
By Annita Mutubuki
The Embassy of Nicaragua, in partnership with Audacious Women, transformed its Harare grounds into a vibrant celebration of women on September 27, 2025. The event brought together diplomats, young leaders, women entrepreneurs, representatives from various organizations and members of the public to celebrate women’s creativity, culture and empowerment under the unifying theme Ubuntu & Solidaridad.
The Fair served as both a post-celebration of Nicaragua’s Independence and a platform to highlight women’s voices. Guests were treated to women-led exhibitions, cultural performances and thought-provoking conversations that spoke to the strength and resilience of women across diverse communities. Stalls showcased local innovations, artistry and traditional foods, creating a rich tapestry of cultural exchange.
Several distinguished speakers stimulated conversations around women’s empowerment and participation, feminine health and hygiene, wellness, and financial literacy. Lorraine Ndlovu Thondhlana, CEO of Zambuko Trust, shared her inspiring journey from working as an assistant at an ATM for a local bank to becoming the CEO of Zambuko Trust, a leading microfinance company in Zimbabwe. She highlighted how the organization deliberately offers a variety of loans to women as a way of encouraging economic independence. Her story and insights on women’s leadership and empowerment inspired many attendees to reflect on how they can actively contribute to social change in their own communities.
The Fair also featured captivating entertainment from Wise Owl Junior School, with performances including dance and marimba music, bringing joy and energy to the day. What a celebration it was, an event that truly blended learning, culture and inspiration.
In her remarks, the Ambassador of Nicaragua emphasized the importance of solidarity and collaboration in addressing global challenges, noting that women’s leadership is key to building just and inclusive societies. The event not only celebrated Nicaragua’s independence journey but also underscored the values of unity, empowerment and cross-cultural friendship.
For the Southern African Young Diplomats (SAYD), the Fair was a meaningful moment to witness diplomacy in practice, where embassies serve not only as sites of policy but also as bridges of people-to-people connection. It was a reminder that diplomacy is at its best when it uplifts communities, empowers women and fosters cultural understanding.
The Women’s Fair concluded with a renewed sense of solidarity, leaving everyone inspired to carry forward the spirit of Ubuntu and Solidaridad in their own spheres of influence. We are grateful for the opportunity to attend, learnand network with fellow diplomats, women entrepreneurs and other inspirational women.
