Southern African Young Diplomats

Discovering Diplomacy at the Heart of Malaysia.

“We may have different religions, different languages, different colored skin, but we all belong to one human race.” , Kofi Annan. These profound words found new meaning for a group of aspiring diplomats from Southern Africa during an inspiring educational consular visit to the Embassy of Malaysia in Harare on June 26 2025. The visit formed part of the Southern African Young Diplomats Program, aimed at preparing the next generation of diplomatic leaders.

The visit offered far more than a glimpse into Malaysian foreign affairs, it offered a masterclass in diplomacy, cultural exchange, and international cooperation.A vibrant multimedia presentation offered a panoramic view of Malaysia’s rich cultural heritage and its strategic role as Chair of ASEAN. Aspiring Diplomats were especially intrigued by Malaysia’s foreign policy, which emphasizes peace, people-centered development, and regional cooperation as principles that echo Zimbabwe’s own Diplomatic objectives. Of particular interest to the group were the educational opportunities available in Malaysia. Aspiring Diplomats learnt about the country’s affordable and inclusive higher education system, scholarship programs, and the welcoming environment offered to international students, including those from Zimbabwe.

The visit concluded with a traditional Malaysian brunch, featuring a beloved national dish. The meal was  a symbol of cross-cultural connection and shared dialogue, as delegates exchanged thoughts on becoming impactful diplomats in a rapidly evolving world. Reflecting on the visit, many described it as transformational. The Aspiring Diplomats referenced it as a reminder of the relevance of understanding different cultures in building relations within the International community.

Chargé d’Affaires Mr. Anif M. Faux delivered a compelling address, challenging the Aspiring Delegates to reconsider their understanding of diplomacy beyond glamour and travel to a purpose journey and passion towards the livelihood of the general population. The Embassy of Malaysia extended a hand of friendship and in doing so, reminded the future diplomats of what truly lies beyond protocol.
